If you want to see City SC’s mission and values in action, you need not look further than our Champions League Program and the outstanding young ladies who have taken the lead for the 2023 season– Brooke Stealey and Paige Bickley.

Launched in 2015 by former player Kate McInerny, the Champions League is a free 6 week program for players age 2-18 with disabilities.  It pairs each player with a buddy, providing a safe environment to learn and love the game of soccer.  Overseen by City SC Recreation Director Gregg Cacioppo, the program has been handed down year after year to players in the club who take responsibility for coordinating and leading 30+ volunteer buddies.

“Champions League is a great example of how City SC is instilling a lifelong passion for the game of soccer,” said Cacioppo.  “It really brings our community together with club players volunteering to help our Champions League kids.  Truly ‘more than soccer’ personified.”

G2007 GA players Brooke and Paige were inspired to pursue the opportunity to take the lead this year after participating in the program last year for the first time as volunteer buddies. As juniors in high school and dedicated GA players, Brooke (San Dieguito Academy) and Paige (Santa Fe Christian) both juggle busy schedules, but volunteering is an important part of who they are.

“Volunteering is a huge part of life and it broadens your perspective,” said Paige.  “I love seeing all the kids happy and having fun at Champions League, and it’s important to me to give back to City SC, because the club has done a lot for me.”

Brooke and Paige have both been with the club over 10 years, starting as recreational players and eventually progressing up to the Academy level.

“Being with the club for so many years, a lot of time is spent at soccer,” said Brooke. “Being able to take our passion and connect to other kids who may not have the same opportunities and making them a of part of it is really special.”

A common theme that Brooke and Paige continually stress about the program is connection– it’s ability to connect players of all ages, levels and experiences.  It’s a great example of how soccer can bring so many people together to support a cause, and form lasting memories and friendships.

“Brooke and Paige have made the Champions League a massive success and have brought some new creative ideas to an already great program,” said Cacioppo. “We are so grateful and proud of them, and can’t wait to have them both return next year!”
