After playing with the LA Galaxy San Diego Development Academy program since its inception in 2016, we are proud to say that two of our players, Jayden Okonkwo and Demetrius Tanks, have graduated into the LA Galaxy MLS Academy at the StubHub Center. Demetrius, a defender, and Jayden, a striker, were selected to join LA Galaxy MLS Academy, one of the highest regarded MLS academies in the US, after their outstanding performances for our LAGSD Academy.

Both players were monitored closely by the LA Galaxy Academy staff last season, and following successful trainings up at StubHub Center, everyone felt the time was right for the boys to take the next step towards their dream of becoming professional soccer players. Both boys are currently starting for the LA Galaxy BU14 (2005) Academy team, who are 3-0 on the season, with Jayden having 2 goals to his name already.

“Once again, to see players within our Academy program getting opportunities to train and play for LA Galaxy Academy is validation of our alliance partnership but more importantly of the great work our coaches are implementing,” commented LAGSD Director of Boys, Glenn Malone. “We absolutely believe that the pathway our club is offering is tangible and every player has an opportunity to fulfill their individual goals. We wish Demetrius and Jayden the very best of luck in the next stage of heir development!”

Steve Cowell, LAGSD Technical Director, added, “Both players have worked hard here to develop the key qualities for the positions they play, and both fit the player profile that the Galaxy are looking for in future professional players. They are great kids and are a pleasure to coach. I am really excited to see where this journey will take them.”

“We are delighted that two of our former players have taken the next step on their development pathway,” commented LAGSD Boys Academy Director, Paul Ritchie. “To be a part of an MLS Academy program is an excellent opportunity for Jayden and Demetrius. We will continue to work with the LA Galaxy by providing a pathway for all players who have the potential to play at the highest level of youth soccer in America. Congratulations to both boys.”

Jamie Harvey, LA Galaxy Academy Youth Technical Manager and BU14 Academy Head Coach, said, “Jayden and Demetrius have been fantastic additions to the LA Galaxy Academy Program. They have huge potential and I see them being in our system for quite some years. The work the LA Galaxy San Diego staff did with the boys definitely set them up to be part of the Academy and gave them a great foundation to build from. The LAG Academy is definitely seeing the benefit of having LAGSD as an Academy Alliance club”.

“I am very proud to have been a part of the 05 Development Academy squad at LAGSD. LA Galaxy San Diego provided a pathway for me to move closer to my goal of becoming a professional soccer player,” added a very excited Jayden Okonkwo. “As an LAGSD player, I developed my technical, tactical, physical, and mental game. My coaches helped me gain confidence in my abilities, especially when at times I doubted myself. They continued to support me and give useful advice which positively affected my performances on and off the pitch. The coaching staff are amazing, I met other kids that shared the same dream and passion as me, formed lasting relationships, and developed as a player. I hope to continue to make LAGSD proud in my new role with LA Galaxy.”
