City SC Volunteer Requirements
As a 501c3 non profit organization City SC is dependent on parent volunteers and fundraising events to offset program operating expenses, keep registration fees down and to boost our financial aid fund to ensure that finances are not a barrier to participation in the program. Fundraising events are the club’s only source of income outside of program registration fees. We rely heavily on funds generated through events such as the Carlsbad Cup and Coastal Classic tournaments, Club Day, and City SC Open Golf Tournament to keep our programs running. Volunteer support is absolutely essential to running these events.

Required Hours

  • Each City SC family is required to complete one 4 hour field marshal shift at the Carlsbad Cup (July) or Coastal Classic (August)
  • The requirement is one shift per FAMILY, regardless of how many players you have in the competitive program
  • Minimum age requirement to volunteer is 16 without adult supervision
  • In the event that we have adequate volunteer support for summer tournaments, additional volunteer opportunities may be made available at other fundraising events

Signing Up for Shifts
Volunteer schedules will be distributed by the club prior to each summer tournament. Each family will be responsible for signing up for a shift at that time. Any LIVE 2024 summer tournament sign up links will be clickable below:

Volunteer Hours Buy-Out Option
If your family prefers not to volunteer, you may pay a one time fee of $200 per player at registration. The buyout fee will be used to cover the cost of staffing events in the absence of volunteers. If you did not opt out at the time of registration but wish to do so at any point in the season, you can do so by calling our office at: (760) 434-5600

  1. What is a field marshal and what will be required of me as a volunteer? Field marshals are stationed at each field during summer tournaments.  They are responsible for facilitating basic tournament operations such as check in, reporting scores, documenting injuries and red cards and alerting our tournament staff to any issues that arise at the field. We use 10+ fields at city parks and schools in Carlsbad and neighboring communities for each tournament weekend.
  2. What are the tournament dates for field marshaling? Carlsbad Cup Boys: July 19-21, 2024 Carlsbad Cup Girls: July 26-28, 2024 Coastal Classic Girls: August 16-18, 2024 Coastal Classic Boys: August 23-25, 2024
  3. When can I sign up for my volunteer shift? When released, Volunteer Sign Up links for Carlsbad Cup & Carlsbad Coastal Classic will be posted above and emailed to competitive club members. Please note there is a separate tab to display the schedule for each field
  4. Can my player/child participate in the volunteer requirement for our family? 16 is the minimum age to volunteer as a field marshal without parent supervision.  The club can sign off on community service hours for youth volunteers upon request.  Players who are younger than 16 are also eligible to work for volunteer hours for community service but must be supervised by a parent during their volunteer shift.
  5. Are there other opportunities to volunteer? Our greatest volunteer need is by far our summer tournaments.  It takes roughly 200 people per weekend to adequately staff these events– 800 total across all four weekends. We do require volunteers throughout the year for other events and programs such as Club Day, the City SC Open Golf Tournament, Kick Hunger Rec All Star Tournament, the Giving Back Friendlies, Rec Uniform Distribution, etc.Depending on volunteer needs, specific teams may be assigned to volunteer with other events or programs. If your team is assigned to volunteer at events other than our summer tournaments, this will be communicated to your team in advance.
  6. Can I still “opt out” of volunteering? Yes.  If you did not opt-out of volunteering at the time of registration and prefer to “opt-out” at this time, you can pay the opt out fee by credit card by calling out office at 760-434-5600.  Office hours vary seasonally and can be found here.
  7. What happens if I don’t complete the volunteer requirement? Families that do not complete the volunteer requirement will be assessed the $200 opt-out fee at the end of January 2025.
