After a four year absence due to the pandemic, a group of City SC coaches & family members led a very early morning mission to Tijuana on Saturday, May 6, 2023, to run the annual ‘Copa Corazón’ soccer event in aid of the charity Corazón.
Over 100 local school children from 6 different Tijuana and Tecate based communities participated in the event. Children were split into five different groups based on ages and communities. With set coaches assigned to each group, the groups then participated in small sided games and skills clinics throughout the day; playing, chatting and having fun.
Every child received a uniform, a soccer ball, a backpack and a Copa Corazón medal. Children who did not have cleats also received new cleats.
As well as giving a special thanks to our coaches and helpers, the event itself is ran purely on donations so we’d also like to thank Challenger Sports, Fusion Risk Management, LA Galaxy, Manchester United and soccer.com; who collectively donated uniforms, lunches, medals, soccer balls and backpacks.
City SC’s lead organizer/representative, Adam Martin, commented, “It feels like forever since we had the last Copa Corazón, so to finally be able to get back to running this fantastic event is a great feeling. Not only do the players get so much from this event but it’s a great opportunity for our City SC coaches to be able to volunteer and pass some soccer knowledge onto these children. It was smiles all round throughout the day and we’re all looking forward to next year’s Copa Corazón already.”
Big well done to all involved!
