The Galaxy Open is one of LA Galaxy San Diego’s primary fundraising events. The event, that took place on July 1st, 2016, at the Crossings at Carlsbad golf course, was technically the 4th year of the club’s fundraising golf day, although this year, with the change of club name, the tournament also took a new approach – new name, new day, new venue, etc.

Essentially, the day is an opportunity for LAGSD parents, coaches and members of the local communities to get together and have a lot of fun (away from the soccer fields) in support of a good cause. Since the event is a “scramble” format it means that you don’t need to be a good golfer to take part and enjoy. The event had several main features this year including chances to win vacations and $10k on certain holes, as well as a guest hitter that could drive the ball over 300 yards on average.

In total, 112 participants took to the course, with more joining later on for the evening meal and prize giving. This resulted in over $12,000 being raised. These proceeds will go towards supporting several branches of our soccer club including:

  • Families in need of financial assistance
  • Our Specialist Goal Keeper program
  • Field maintenance & team training equipment
  • Coach education
  • Our Champions League special needs soccer league
  • Our over-seas, coaching exchange partnership with Challenger Sports

Galaxy Open Tournament Director & LAGSD Coach, Phil Shuttleworth, commented, “It seems like the event was very well received this year and people had a great time. I’d like to thank everyone who played & joined us for dinner afterwards. Your presence & generosity will go a long way to helping our soccer program be the very best it can be. I’d also like to thank the Crossings at Carlsbad and their staff for hosting an amazing event, along with all of the volunteers, especially those on the LAGSD golf day committee for their tireless hard work. Huge praise must also go to each of our sponsors (listed below) and any person or group that donated raffle and/or auction prizes.”

Coach Phil continued, “The next task is to find ways to make this event even better for next year and help it become a permanent fixture on the calendar for years to come. The vision is to make this day a yearly event that people will really look forward to being a part of, all while helping with the development of youth soccer for ALL within our community.”
